The House Banking, Finance and Urban Affairs subcommittees on Consumer Affairs and Housing and Urban Development heard testimony on discrepancies in the granting of mortgages to applicants of different races. Statistics derived from information filed by lending institutions to the Federal Reserve, which is required to be made public by amendments to the Federal Home Mortgage Disclosure Act, showed that minority mortgage applicants are rejected twice as often as non-minority applicants. Witnesses included minority mortgage applicants and lending institution officials. close
