Speaker of the House Thomas Foley, Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell and Rep. Maxine Waters responded to questions from reporters in the White House driveway after meeting with President Bush over the administration’s proposals to revitalize America’s cities. Rep. Waters said she was encouraged by the efforts by the Democratic leadership and the administration to deal with the problems of American cities. Senate Minority Leader Dole and Sen. Simpson followed the Democratic leaders in responding to questions from reporters. Sen. Dole said that while the Republicans generally agreed with the proposals for economic revitalization, they were concerned about how the programs would be paid for. close
