The Secretary of the Interior held a news conference to announce the release of a plan by the Department of the Interior’s Endangered Species Committee concerning foresting in the Pacific Northwest. The committee, chaired by Secretary Lujan and meeting for the third time in its existence, voted to allow greater deforestation of the Pacific Northwest and further reduction of the natural habitat of the spotted owl, an endangered species. Secretary Lujan called the proposal the “preservation plan,” and claimed politics had nothing to do with its formulation. close
