Members of the Senate debated H.R. 5132, an emergency appropriations bill for the cities of Los Angeles and Chicago. The bill, passed by the House of Representatives the previous week, would provide money to aid Los Angeles, devastated by riots earlier in the month, and Chicago, which was badly damaged by flooding when a leak occurred in an abandoned system of tunnels underneath many major downtown buildings. The Senate version of the bill also includes funding for youth job programs and education programs for all the nation’s major cities. close
