President George H. W. Bush spoke to NASA employees in the Goddard Space Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, to announce the formation of a new plan to save the world’s forests. Daniel Goldin, Administrator, NASA, introduced the president. Speaking before a picture of the Earth as seen from space, President Bush said the administration would increase aid to the forestry programs of other countries by $150 million and challenged other countries to double their spending on forestry and conservation to prevent the depletion of the world’s trees. His speech was given the week before the president was to travel to Rio to participate in the United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development. close
