Jean-Bertrand Aristide, the exiled president of Haiti, delivered the keynote address at the 15th-anniversary dinner of TransAfrica, an organization dedicated to African and African-American issues. Mr. Aristide, who was ousted out of office by a military coup in 1991, spoke on his desire to restore democracy to Haiti and his hopes to return to power in Haiti in the future. The program began with the presentation of several awards and scholarships to people who had made outstanding contributions to society, including the novelist Alice Walker and the Reverend Charles Cobb.
