Members of the House of Representatives debated H.R. 5488, the fiscal year 1993 appropriations bill for the Treasury, Postal Service and general government operations. The debate involved an amendment that would restore funding to the President’s Council for Competitiveness, which had been eliminated in the present appropriations bill. Opponents of the council, which is headed by Vice President Quayle, claim it hindered the enforcement of government regulations and is unaccountable to any government body. The House failed to pass the amendment that would have restored funding to the President’s Council on Competitiveness. close
