Several Democratic House members spoke to reporters in the U.S. Capitol responding to the administration’s earlier news conference on the economy with Budget Director Richard Darman. Representative Richard Gephardt (D-MO) refuted arguments that Congress was to blame for the deficit and the nation’s economic ills by noting the willingness of Congress to pass the administration’s budgets in the 1980's. Representative Leon Panetta (D-CA) recited a number of instances when the administration claimed the economy would soon improve when it subsequently continued to remain relatively dormant. close
