Bertie Bowman is the hearing coordinator for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. In his memoir, Step by Step, he writes about being a farmer’s son in the Jim Crow South, hired by South Carolina senator Burnet Maybank to work as a janitor in the U.S. Capitol. He worked his way up at the Capitol, building friendships with Lyndon Johnson, Bill Clinton, William Fulbright, and Strom Thurmond along the way. In the book he shares his recollections as a witness to history, from World War II through the Civil Rights movement, Vietnam, and Watergate, up to the present day.

Bertie Bowman has been hearing coordinator for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee since 2000, after working for the Foreign Relations Committee for twenty-five years, first as committee clerk and then as assistant hearing coordinator. He owns and operates Bertie’s Limousine Service, a Washington, DC chauffeur company. close
