Senator Mel Martinez talked about A Sense of Belonging, which recounts his childhood in Cuba and his family’s precarious departure from the country following the Communist Revolution. Senator Martinez recalls his arrival in the United States at the age of 15 and his later law career and political ascendance. Following his remarks, Senator Martinez responded to questions from the audience.

Mel Martinez is a Republican Senator from Florida. He is the former chairman of the Republican National Committee and former secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Senator Martinez currently sits on several committees', including Armed Services, Housing and Urban Affairs, and Energy and Natural Resources. Senator Martinez is the first Cuban-American to serve in the United States Senate. close
