The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs subcommittee on disaster recovery held a hearing on hurricanes Ike and Gustav. In the first panel, mayors of the cities of Houston, TX; Shreveport, LA; and Galveston, TX, and a Louisiana state senator testified on the extent of damage in their states and asked for federal assistance. In the second panel, the lieutenant governors of Louisiana and Texas talked about preparations made for the hurricanes, provided estimates of damage costs, and advocated for federal assistance. FEMA and Homeland Security officials spoke in the third panel about lessons learned, preparedness and response roles, and progress made since hurricanes Rita and Katrina. close
