A hearing was held on the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC), which provides basic pension benefits to workers if an employer is unable to pay those benefits. In 2007 it was reported that pension plans insured by the corporation were underfunded by $350 billion and that the corporation has a $14 billion deficit. Testimony and questioning focused on the reasons for PBGC’s deficit, steps taken to to build for the future, funding structure, financial challenges, governance and management issues, and the impact of the current financial markets crisis. close
