William Greider read selections from and talked about his book, The Soul of Capitalism: Opening Paths to a Moral Economy. According to Mr. Greider, although our society has solved the fundamental economic problems of starvation and scarcity of provisions, American capitalism is failing most citizens. He asserts that the pursuit of affluence has eroded family life, damaged communities and ruined the environment. Mr. Greider contends that the solution will not be found through the usual political means or more government regulation. He suggests that small-scale reformers working to transform the economic system from within will effect the needed changes. Following his remarks, he responded to audience members' questions.
