Bill Murphy, Jr., talked about his book In a Time of War: The Proud and Perilous Journey of West Point’s Class of 2002 (Henry Holt and Co.; September 16, 2008). In the book he profiles the first West Point class that graduated and went directly on to serving as officers in the Iraq War. Commentary was provided by General Peter Chiarelli (vice chief of staff US Army), Lieutenant Colonel John Nagl (Iraq War veteran and West Point class of 1988), Captain Jason Fritz (Iraq War veteran and West Point class of 2002). Panel members responded to questions from the audience. Michèle Flournoy, President and Co-Founder of CNAS, moderated the discussion on the nature of duty, sacrifice, and officership during wartime.
Bill Murphy, Jr. worked as Bob Woodward’s research assistant on Woodward’s book State of Denial. A lawyer and former Army Reserve officer, he reported from Iraq for the Washington Post in 2007. close
