In the book Mr. Dray examines the Reconstruction era though the political lives of the first African American Congressmen. Mr. Dray presents the racial prejudice that the sixteen representatives faced while in office, the many issues they advocated for throughout their tenures, and the demise of Reconstruction and the beginning of Jim Crow laws.
