Adam Shepard talked about his book Scratch Beginnings: Me, $25, and the Search for the American Dream (Collins; October 14, 2008). In the book he recounts his experiment to see if he could make a living starting with $25, the clothes on his back, and a sleeping bag. Mr. Shepard was frustrated following reading the books on the working and middle class by Barbara Ehrenreich, Nickel and Dimed and Bait and Switch and wanted to refute the author’s theories. Mr. Shepard graduated from Merrimack College in 2006. His goal was to, without using previous contacts or relying on his college education, in one year to have an apartment, a car, and $2,500. close
