Gar Alperovitz and Lew Daly talked about they book they co-authored, Unjust Deserts: How the Rich Are Taking Our Common Inheritance and Why We Should Take It Back. They argue that a great majority of the wealth created in the United States is the result of inherited social knowledge and is far less attributable to ingenuity, an increase in effort, or smart investment decisions on the part of individuals. They say that since this is the case, society as a whole should benefit from this wealth creation far more than it currently does. Following their remarks, the authors responded to audience members' questions.

Gar Alperovitz is a professor of political economy at the University of Maryland. He is the author of America Beyond Capitalism and The Decision to Use the Atomic Bomb.

Lew Daly is a senior fellow at Demos and the author of God and the Welfare State. close
