Bernard Kalb moderated a panel discussion about the impact of the front pages of the New York Times going back to 1851 and how that impact has changed over time, especially recently. The participants also talk about how front page stories are chosen and changes made by distribution of news on the Internet. The panelists responded to questions from members of the audience. This event was held by the Smithsonian Associates in the S. Dillon Ripley Center at 7:00 p.m.

The New York Times: The Complete Front Pages, 1851-2008 (Black Dog and Leventhal Publishers; November 1, 2008). This book from The New York Times, with an introduction by executive editor Bill Keller, has reproductions of over 300 of the most significant headline stories and the 3 DVDs included have each of the 54,266 front pages printed by the Times over the past 157 years. News summaries throughout highlight the most significant events of each era and put the front pages into a historical context while seventeen essays by Times writers comment on pivotal moments. close
