President Obama held his first presidential news conference during prime time in the East Room of the White House. He made an opening statement in which he spoke about the state of the economy and urged Congress to act quickly to pass economic stimulus and recovery legislation. He then answered questions from the press corps on a number of issues. In his answeres he outlined several ways the economic stimulus legislation was designed to mitigate the current negative economic trends and talked about his goals to return 4 million Americans to work. He also spoke about his approach to foreign policy in Afghanistan, the Middle East and Iran, as well as his position on rendition and torture of enemy combatants. close
