Daniel Mark Epstein recounted the lives of President Lincoln’s secretaries and first biographers, John Nicolay, John Hay, and William Stoddard. Mr. Nicolay and Mr. Hay were able to write about the personal life of President Lincoln as they lived in the White House and worked closely with the president. Mr. Epstein also talked about the complex relationship between President Lincoln and his wife Mary Todd Lincoln. Mr. Epstein answered questions submitted by members of audience.

Daniel Mark Epstein is the author of: Lincoln’s Men: The President and His Private Secretaries, published by Smithsonian; The Lincolns: Portrait of a Marriage, published by Ballantine Books; and Lincoln and Whitman: Parallel Lives in Civil War Washington, also published by Ballantine Books.

This event was held in the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum’s Union Theatre as part of the celebration of the bicentennial of President Lincoln’s birth. close
