Fred Kaplan talked about his book Lincoln: The Biography of a Writer (Harper; October 28, 2008). In his book Fred Kaplan explores the relationship between language and the sixteenth president, as he examines Abraham Lincoln’s writing life and how it molded his identity, relationships, and career and defined him as president. Mr. Kaplan recounts Lincoln’s voracious reading habits, indulging in the likes of Shakespeare, Byron, and the Old Testament, and dissects his public addresses and personal correspondences. Following his remarks Professor Kaplan responded to audience members' questions. This event was hosted by Books Etc. in Portland, Maine, on the bicentennial of President Lincoln’s birth.
