February 2009 Employment Numbers The Joint Economic Committee heard a report on February 2009 employment figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The report released the same day indicated that unemployment in the U.S. had risen from 7.6 to 8.1% over the past month as payroll employment declined by 2.6 million in the past 4 months. In February, job losses were large and widespread across nearly all major industry sectors. Commissioner Keith Hall testified about recent developments in the labor market. Topics included the relationship between unemployment and home foreclosures and the importance of census data being free of even the perception of political influence. close
