Mexican Drug Cartels Alex Kingsbury talked about the spreading power and violence of Mexican drug cartels and responded to telephone calls and electronic mail. During the previous year, Mexico’s drug wars claimed more than 6,200 lives and more than 1,000 in the first two months of 2009. The violence escalated when the Mexican government began a crackdown on the cartels. Mexican cartels traffic drugs throughout the United States and the violence has spill over the border into cities like San Diego, Laredo, and Phoenix. Mayor John Cook talked by telephone from El Paso, Texas, saying that the federal law enforcement presence in his border city has kept trouble there to a minimum. Mr. Kingsbury talked about the federal response to the situation and how the problem affects different cities. He also pointed out that the funding and weapons for the cartels comes from the United States. close
