Supreme Court Justice David Souter talked about how history explains why current judges see the facts of court cases differently from their predecessors. Following Justice Souter’s remarks, he took part in a panel discussion on the state of humanities education and its funding and answered questions from members of the audience.

The symposium “The Humanities in a Civil Society” was held at George Washington University to coincide with publication by the American Academy of the “Humanities Indicators,” the first comprehensive data set about the humanities in America, and a special issue of the Academy’s journal Daedalus on the humanities.
