Flora Jessop, a former fundamentalist Latter Day Saints member, took part in a forum on three books about abuse in religious communities. Her book, Church of Lies (Jossey-Bass; January 8, 2009), which she co-wrote with Paul Brown, tells her story of life in polygamy, her escape, and the crusade to rescue women and girls held against their will. Robert McMackin, co-editor of Understanding the Impact of Clergy Sexual Abuse, spoke on post-traumatic stress syndrome. Hassan Mahmud, author of Islam and Sharia talked about the lack of an adequate abuse antidote thus far in Western culture. The panelists responded to audience members' questions following their discussion. Hella Winston moderated.

Flora Jessop is a leading advocate for the rescue of women and children in abusive situations. She is a former self-described victim of a polygamous community. close
