Raymond Arsenault talked about his book The Sound of Freedom: Marian Anderson, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Concert That Awakened America (Bloomsbury Press; March 31, 2009). He talked on stage with Sheldon Hackney about the story of contralto Marian Anderson (1897-1993) who sang before a crowd of seventy-five thousand on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Easter Sunday 1939. She had been barred from performing at the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Constitution Hall because she was black. First lady Eleanor Roosevelt resigned from the DAR over the incident and made it a national issue. She convinced Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes to allow the concert to proceed on the National Mall, which became a breakthrough moment in the struggle for civil rights. An audio clip of the concert was played with slides. Professor Arsenault responded to questions from members of the audience. close
