Rick Perlstein was interviewed at the 102nd annual meeting of the Organization of American Historians at
Rick Perlstein talked about his book Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America (Scribner; May 13, 2008). In his book he recounts Richard Nixon’s use of the turmoil of the 1960s such as riots, anti-Vietnam War protests, the drug culture and other displays of unrest to transform America’s conservative movement, broken by Lyndon Johnson’s overwhelming 1964 victory at the polls against Goldwater, to set the stage for his narrow win of 1968 and landslide victory of 1972. He contends that this period split the country into two radically opposed camps. He also talked about the other books in his “Backlash Trilogy.” His first book in the series was Before the Storm: Barry Goldwater and the Unmaking of the American Consensus and he is currently working on a book about the rise of conservatism in the 1970s. He talked about why he writes about the political right.
