Authors talked about their biographies. Jim Newton moderated a discussion with the authors on topics including telling history through character development and choosing a biographical subject. The panelists responded to questions from members of the audience.

Paula Giddings is the author of Ida: A Sword Among Lions, Ida B. Wells and the Campaign Against Lynching, published by Amistad. Ida B. Wells (1862-1931), born to slaves in Mississippi, became a leading activist. Richard Reeves is the author of A Force of Nature: The Frontier Genius of Ernest Rutherford, published by W.W. Norton, about the life and work of physicist Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937). Robert Roper is the author of Now the Drum of War: Walt Whitman and His Brothers in the Civil War (Walker and Company; October 28, 2008). The book is based on the correspondence of poet Walt Whitman among his brothers and his mother.
