Andrew Lih talked about his book The Wikipedia Revolution: How a Bunch of Nobodies Created the World’s Greatest Encyclopedia (Hyperion; March 17, 2009). He talked about the founding of Wikipedia in 2001 based on Jimmy Wales’s more traditional earlier encyclopedia, the peer-reviewed Nupedia, powered by Ward Cunningham’s software invention, Wiki. He described the qualities of Wikipedia, the website that provides easy accessibility to information about almost anything, as free, open, neutral, timely, and social. He illustrated his brief talk with slides, and then was interviewed by David Weinberger about how Wikipedia has influenced the Internet and culture, and its implications beyond encyclopedia writing. Topics included that as its problem is no longer growth, but reliability. He also responded to questions from members of the audience.
