Matthew Algeo talked about his book Harry Truman’s Excellent Adventure: The True Story of a Great American Road Trip, published by the Chicago Review Press. In his book he retraces the road trip that President Harry Truman and his wife Bess took in the summer of 1953 from Independence, Missouri, to New York City. The nineteen-day trip, attempted by the former first couple in anonymity, brought them face to face with the American public as they frequented family owned roadside stands, stores, and motels. They traveled frugally, as presidents at that time did not receive a pension or Secret Service protection. Mr. Algeo answered questions from members of the audience.
