Tour guides Michelle and James Nevius talked about their book Inside the Apple: A Streetwise History of New York City (Free Press; March 24, 2009) in which they explore the history of New York City block by block. They showed slides as they talked about the history of New York City, starting with the effect of glaciers on the creation of the regional geography, the growth of the city from colonial New Amsterdam, to an ever transforming Manhattan. Topics ranged from the Flatiron Building to speakeasies and the creation of Central Park. They focused on some of the important New Yorkers who were integral to the creation and early life of the New York Historical Society and the 400th anniversary of the city. They also gave a “virtual tour” of the history of the Upper West Side neighborhood where the society now resides. They answered questions from members of the audience. close
