President Obama spoke about proposed changes to the way the U.S. government oversees financial markets. He called on Congress to grant the Federal Reserve and the executive branch of government new powers to supervise previously unregulated aspects of the economy. The new rules would contain provisions to: give the federal government power to take over and wind down a large financial company; give the Federal Reserve more power over payments and settlement systems; and create a financial services oversight council. They also would contain several provisions for consumer protections. close
