Scott Berg spoke about the founding of the District of Columbia and its place as the seat of the federal government. In his remarks he talked about the collaboration between George Washington and architect Pierre Charles L’Enfant and the role architecture and planning would play in the early days of the federal city. He responded to questions from members of the audience.

Scott Berg is the author of Grand Avenues: The Story of the French Visionary Who Designed Washington, D.C. (Pantheon; February 13, 2007).

“Forging a National Identity: The Federal City” was a presentation at the eleventh annual George Washington Teachers' Institute, “George Washington and The Challenges of Nation Building,” held on July 21-22, 2009, at Mount Vernon. It was co-hosted by George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens and The White House Historical Association. close
