Dennis Conrad, editor of the Papers of General Nathanael Greene, presented an assessment of General Greene and the Revolutionary War in the South. General Greene, who he termed a forgotten hero of the American Revolution, reconquered the South after the British had destroyed two American armies, overrun two states and was poised to conquer a third. Mr. Conrad talked about General Greene, his command style, and his campaigns to assess why he succeeded where so many other American general officers failed. When the war started, Green was a militia private (the lowest rank possible) but rose to become one of George Washington’s most gifted officers. Mr. Conrad responded to questions from members of the audience.

“General Nathanael Greene: An Appraisal” was a noon lecture in the Jefferson Room of the National Archives on Wednesday, August 26, 2009. close
