Uyghur leader Rebiya Kadeer talked about her book Dragon Fighter: One Woman’s Epic Struggle for Peace with China (Kales Press; May 19, 2009). Her book tells her life story as a refugee child, as a poor housewife, as a multimillionaire, as a high official in China’s National People’s Congress, as a political prisoner in solitary confinement for two of nearly six years in jail, and as a political dissident living in exile in Washington, D.C. Ms. Kadeer’s remarks were translated into English. She opened the program with comments on disturbing news from China. Her daughter Kekenos read a passage of the book in English. Then Ms. Kadeer responded to questions from members of the audience. Topics included the human rights challenges faced by Uyghurs in China, current unrest in the Xinjiang region, and the reception of her autobiography.
