Debora Hanson, a 2008 U.S. Capitol Historical Society fellow, talked about the works of muralists Allyn Cox and Jeffrey Greene, whose murals in the House wing of the Capitol provide an artistic narrative of U.S. history. The murals were sponsored and funded by the U.S. Capitol Historical Society. Professor Hanson presented slides during her talk and then responded to questions from members of the audience.

Allyn Cox (1896-1982) painted murals on two corridors on the first floor of the House wing. Jeffrey Green painted the third corridor, completing a design envisioned by Mr. Cox. The scenes include portraits, historical events, and maps relating to the development and growth of the United States. Other work by Mr. Cox included a portrait of Henry Clay in the Senate Reception room, the Rotunda frieze, and a mural in the north Brumidi Corridor depicting the moon landing.

“Allyn Cox and Jeffrey Greene: Muralists of the United States Capitol” was part of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society close
