The Hawk and the Dove
Nicholas Thompson talked about his book The Hawk and the Dove: Paul Nitze, George Kennan, and the History of the Cold War (Henry Holt and Co.; September 15, 2009). In his book he details the contentious work relationship between defense and foreign policy advisers Paul Nitze and George Kennan, whose political thinking influenced U.S. strategy during the Cold War. Mr. Thompson, grandson of Paul Nitze, reports that despite their disagreements Mr. Kennan and Mr. Nitze remained close friends throughout their life as they argued about the direction of U.S. foreign policy from the use of the A-bomb to U.S. involvement in Vietnam. Mr. Thompson talked about the process of researching the book and read passages. He responded to questions from members of the audience. close
