The Fourth Star Greg Jaffee talked about the book he wrote with David Cloud, The Fourth Star: Four Generals and the Epic Struggle for the Future of the United States Army (Crown; October 13, 2009).

The book profiles four generals who joined the Army in the wake of its defeat in Vietnam, how the Army helped shape their lives, and how they helped shape the Army and the Iraq War. Generals George Casey, Peter Chiarelli, John Abizaid, and David Petraeus played crucial roles in the planning and execution of the current war in Iraq. He talked about the life lessons these generals brought to the war. Among his recommendations was a broader education for young officers. He responded to questions from members of the audience.

This talk was part of the Command and General Staff College’s Marshal Hall Lecture series, held Novebmber 4, 2009, at 12:30 p.m. CT at Fort Leavenworth.

Greg Jaffe is the Pentagon correspondent at the Washington Post and previously held the same position at the Wall Street Journal where he was part of the team that won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. close
