Military historian Patrick K. O’Donnell talked about his book They Dared Return: The True Story of Jewish Spies Behind the Lines in Nazi Germany (Da Capo Press; October 13, 2009). He used recently declassified files, private documents, and personal interviews to tell the story of Jewish refugee sent on a covert operation deep into the heavily fortified area of Austria’s “Alpine Redoubt,” where Hitler planned to make his last stand. He was joined by the commander of Operation Greenup, former Sergeant Frederick Mayer. They talked about the achievements of the group and the dangers overcome.
