General Stanley McChrystal and Ambassador Karl Eikenberry testified about plans to send an additional 30,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan and subsequent goals to begin reducing troop levels beginning in July 2011. General McChrystal said in his remarks that the additional troops would give the U.S. “credibility in the minds of Afghans who demand proof not only that we want to protect them but that we can.” They also talked about their expectations for success in enhancing security in the region and bringing more credibility to the political process. Additionally General McChrystal said that either killing or capturing Osama bin Laden would be a symbolic victory that could help defeat al-Qaida. close
