General David Petraeus, Ambassador Karl Eikenberry and Deputy Secretary Jack Lew testified about the Obama administration’s proposed strategy for the war in Afghanistan. The plan includes sending 30,000 additional U.S. troops to that country with a goal to begin a troop draw-down by July 2011. In his remarks General Petraeus said he expected more intense fighting in the coming spring and summer and said the Afghan government’s expected moves to combat corruption would likely result in “greater turmoil within the government.” He also cautioned against any premature judgement on sucess or failure of operations before December 2010. close
