Senator Kent Conrad talked about reducing the U.S. national debt, which is more than $12 trillion, as well as other budget and spending issues. After he left, the reporters discussed his responses with the host.

Senator Conrad is one of the main proponents of creating a national commission to make recommendations about the debt, and Congress would be required to vote on the recommendations. Earlier in the week, the House passed a short-term hike in the debt ceiling. The Treasury Department has warned that a debt limit had to be increased by Dec. 31 to forestall the possibility of default on U.S. financial obligations. close
