He recalled the Battle for Iwo Jima as he experienced it. He was then serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division. He served with five different Marine divisions and rose from private to sergeant major during combat in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He held the rank of sergeant major for 19 and one half years, and when he retired in 1977 he was the most senior enlisted man in all the armed forces.
This is the first of two parts.
