Grace Sugita Hawley talked about being detained during World War II. She was 10 years old and living in Honolulu, Hawaii, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. She and her family were forcibly held during the war in mainland internment camps, including the Jerome and Heart Mountain relocation centers. Ms. Hawley recalled internment, racial relations, her uncle’s death in Hiroshima, and the difficulties her family faced after being released.

This is the second of two parts.

This interview from the Densho Visual History Collection was conducted June 3, 2009, in Honolulu, Hawaii, by Megan Asaka for Densho: The Japanese American Legacy Project. close
