She was 10 years old and living in Honolulu, Hawaii, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. She and her family were forcibly held during the war in mainland internment camps, including the Jerome and Heart Mountain relocation centers. Ms. Hawley recalled internment, racial relations, her uncle’s death in Hiroshima, and the difficulties her family faced after being released.
