President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to Army Staff Sergeant Robert Miller. He was awarded the medal posthumously for his actions in 2008 which saved the lives of his fellow soldiers and 15 Afghan troops. His parents accepted the medal on his behalf.

Sergeant Miller was on foot in northern Afghanistan to clear a valley of insurgents who had attacked Afghanistan’s army and civilians. He was the weapons sergeant and led the Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group and 15 Afghanistan soldiers. One insurgent approached the group at first, but soon 150 swarmed Miller and his fellow soldiers. He told his team to fall back while he moved toward the enemy. He was shot in the upper torso but continued to fight and radio enemy positions, allowing the others to get to a safe location. close
