The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Flores-Villar v. the United States, docket number 09-5801. The case addressed the treatment of unwed mothers and fathers when passing on citizenship to children born abroad. Currently, a foreign-born child of an unwed America mother is a U.S. citizen if the mother has lived in the U.S. for at least one year, but an unwed America father cannot pass citizenship to the child unless he has lived in the U.S. for at least 10 years, 5 after the age of 14. close
