The Senate convened and considered the articles of impeachment against Judge G. Thomas Porteous of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Members voted to convict U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Porteous on the full four impeachment charges. The vote immediately removes Porteous from the bench, and he will also lose his $174,000 annual salary and his federal pension. The Senate also voted to ban him from future public office.

This marked the first time since 1989 that a federal judge had been removed by the Senate. Judge Porteous was only the eighth federal judge to be convicted and removed from office through impeachment. close
