The 3rd U.S. Infantry Caisson Platoon in Arlington, Virginia, was toured. Based in Fort Myer, the Old Guard conducts up to eight full-honors funerals each day with horse-drawn caissons. Video clips were shown of a 2003 funeral and President Kennedy’s funeral and pictures were shown of President Reagan’s funeral. Video clips were also shown of President Johnson’s inauguration.

Work begins at four a.m. when the horses are washed and the tack is cleaned and polished. Specialist Friddel, a rider, talked about his work.

Near the horse stables is the Caisson Platoon Leather Shop. Eugene Burks has worked in the Leather Shop since 1981. He talked about the work involved in preparing funeral caissons according to centuries-old traditions. He demonstrated his work, including the modern machines used as well as traditional techniques. close
