At his first press conference of the New Year, Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan told reporters that his top priorities for Japan are passing the national budget and rescuing the social security system. He was under criticism by the opposition for proposing an increase in the national sales tax in order to fund the welfare system, including social security. Most of the questions in the news conference dealt with political fighting among members over the national budget, cabinet reshuffling, and allegations of ethics violations by a senior lawmaker in the ruling party. close
