House of Representatives members and staff gathered on the steps of the U.S. Capitol for a moment of silence for Representative Giffords. Representative Emanuel Cleaver led a prayer, and Congressional Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton briefly spoke to reporters.

On January 8, 2011, Representative Giffords and 18 others were shot during a constituent meeting held in a supermarket parking lot. Six people died. close
